Issue:

When taking a quiz in Accelerated Reader, the student clicks on [Yes] to confirm he wants to take the selected quiz but the quiz does not start. Instead, the browser displays, ”You are currently taking a quiz. Please switch back to that window”. If the student logs back in and chooses to take a quiz again, a message in the browser tells the student he has previously started the quiz, but answered no questions yet.

Students receive a pop-up blocking message when starting to work on lessons in English in a Flash. The complete message is “Please see your teacher for help. If the quiz did not load correctly, this computer may have popup blocking software. You can adjust your blocker to allow this site, or click the start button below.”  When the student clicks on the [Start] button, the button might disappear, or the lesson may start.

Students receive a pop-up blocking message when starting to work in MathFacts in a Flash at school. The complete message is, “Click the button below to start working. If the test or practice did not load correctly, this computer may have popup blocking software. You can adjust your blocker to allow this site, or click the start button below”. When the student clicks on the [Start] button, either the test or practice loads or nothing happens.

MathFacts in a Flash TOPS reports don’t print, although students don’t see an error.

When choosing to “Take a Test” in STAR Early Literacy, then clicking the [Start] button, the browser displays, “This student currently has work in progress. Please return to that window”.

When choosing to “Take a Test” in STAR Math or STAR Reading, nothing happens when the student clicks on the [Start] button.

Students see the message, “Work in Progress. This student currently has work in progress. Please return to that window” when logging into Renaissance Home Connect and clicking on “Start Practicing” on the MathFacts in a Flash tab.

Reason:

Pop-up blocking software is preventing your Renaissance Place program from functioning as designed.

Resolution:

If you have installed the Yahoo! or Google Toolbar, the built-in pop-up blocker is enabled by default. (Refer to KB article #4751375 for more information on why you might have one of these toolbars.) To allow pop-ups from your Renaissance Place website when using the Google Toolbar or Yahoo! Toolbar, click on the appropriate icon in your toolbar and make the change. You may also choose to uninstall the toolbar using the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel.

Most modern browsers also include an option to block pop-ups which is enabled by default. Refer to the instructions below for the browser you are using.

Internet Explorer

Explorer 6 with the Windows XP Service Pack 2 updates and Internet Explorer 7 and above all include a pop-up blocker. Follow these instructions to disable it:

1)    Open Internet Explorer.

2)    Click on the Tools Menu, then Internet Options.

3)    Click on the Privacy tab.

4)    Under the Pop-up Blocker section, remove the check from “Block pop-ups” in IE6 or “Turn on Pop-up Blocker” in IE 7 and above, or click on [Settings] and add your Renaissance Place web site to the list of allowed sites. You may also add *.renlearn.com to allow pop-ups across the entire domain.

5)    Click [Apply], then [OK].

Firefox

1)    Open Firefox.

2)    Click on the Firefox Menu, then Options.

3)    Click on the Content Menu.

4)    Either uncheck the option to “Block pop-up windows” or click on [Exceptions…] and add your Renaissance Place site as an exception. You may also add *.renlearn.com to allow pop-ups across the entire domain.

5)    Click [OK].

Chrome

1)    Open Chrome.

2)    Click on Settings, then “Show advanced settings…”.

3)    Click on [Content settings…] under the Privacy section.

4)    Either check the option to “Allow all sites to show pop-ups” or click on [Manage exceptions…] and add your Renaissance Place site as an exception. You may also add [*.]renlearn.com to allow pop-ups across the entire domain.

5)    Click [OK].

Safari

1)    Open Safari.

2)    Click on the Safari Menu, then Preferences.

3)    Click on the Security icon.

4)    Uncheck the option to “Block pop-up windows”.

5)    Close the preferences window.

Safari on iPads

Pop-ups function a bit differently when working in Safari on iPads. If the built-in pop-up blocker is turned off, students will see an alert stating, “This site is attempting to open a pop-up window” with options to Block and Allow. They need to tap [Allow]. If they tap [Block] the new window will not open. If the pop-up blocker is on, all pop-ups are disabled and students will not see this alert. To turn the pop-up blocker off:

1)    Open Settings.

2)    Tap Safari in the list on the left.

3)    Switch the Block Pop-ups setting off by moving the slider to the left. On iPads running iOS version 7, the setting will change from green to white. On older iPads, the setting will change from blue to white and display OFF.

For all other pop-up blockers, refer to the software publisher’s documentation.
